A Christmas Thought

A few years back I was asked what my favorite passage about Christmas was.  I think when I said Galatians 4:4-7 people listening were shocked.  I am sure they were expecting Matthew 1 or Luke 2 or maybe even Isaiah 7.  I could see their heads almost spinning trying to figure what Paul said about Christmas in Galatians 4.

So you don’t have to look it up, here it is:

But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children. And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.” Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir.  (NLT)

The reason I love this passage when it comes to Christmas is that it plainly spells out what Christmas is all about.  God was in complete control, when He saw the time was right, He sent His Son to come into the world to buy our freedom with His blood.  And not only to buy our freedom, but to adopt us.  And not only to adopt us, but give us His Spirit.  This all allows us to come into His presence with an endearing term “Abba Father” “my Father” it is a personal, loving term.  God as Father is a position, God as Abba Father is a relationship.  The relationship of an heir, a child of His that is granted an inheritance, eternal life.

That is what Christmas is all about folks.  God’s love, Christ’s sacrifice, our adoption into God’s Family.

Merry Christmas brothers and sisters.
