The Bible is Not a Buffet

I think I might be the king of the buffet.  I mean, really what is better than a good buffet.  What's not to like?  You go in, they give you as many plates you want and you go around picking and choosing from everything they have.  It is truly amazing.

And the great thing is, you don't have to eat something if you don't like it.  When I was a kid, if we went to someone's house for dinner, my brother and I knew no matter what they served, we HAD to eat it.  It was being polite and showing respect to the hospitable person who welcomed us into their home.  I sometimes didn't like that part of being a kid.  So today, at the buffet, if I don't want beets, I don't have to eat beets.  If I don't want liver and onions I don't have to eat it.

I mean, let's face it, there isn't someone at the exit door saying, "Hey, you didn't eat the liver and you didn't eat any beets.  You can't leave until you have eaten everything."

Some people want to treat the Bible like a buffet.  They want to read it and pick and choose what they like about the Bible but they don't want to even look at the parts that might cause to them to change.  But unlike the buffet, the Bible must be taken as a whole.  There is no picking and choosing.

You can't say, "Boy I love this salvation stuff, I want a second helping of that, but I don't want any of the love my enemy jazz."

"This forgiveness and grace and mercy is awesome for me!!  But I think I will skip me forgiving others and not talking about them."

No, the Bible is not a buffet where you can pick and choose what you like about.  You accept it all or none.  Wouldn't our Christian lives be easier if it were?  We could have Jesus as our Savior but not have to worry about Him being LORD.   We could accept the forgiveness and love of Christ without having to grant the same to others.

But that isn't how it works folks.  You can't ride the fence.  Jesus had some words for those who wanted to follow Him and follow the world.  He said He would spit those people out of His mouth.  Trying to follow parts of the Bible and ignore other parts is the same.  The parts you don't want to follow are because of the world.

So you choose for yourselves, do you believe the whole Bible?   There really is no other choice.  It is not the Bible Buffet.

God bless and have a great day!
